San Francisco: San Franciso Cable Car
Cable Alternatives

The San Francisco Cable Car system, the world’s last permanently operation manually-operated cable car system, was launched in 1873 by Andrew Hallidie as an alternative means to horse-drawn trams to traverse the city’s steep hills. By 1889, cars were running along eight lines and by the 1906 earthquake, more than 600 cars were in use. With the advent of the electric streetcar, the cable cars became obsolete and in 1947 Mayor Roger Lapham tried to replace them with buses. The idea was abandoned in the face of protests, led by Friedel Klussmann, and eventually the whole system was declared a national landmark in 1964–the nation’s only moving landmark. The cable car was kept for the steepest lines, while the other modes took over the longer, flatter routes. Today, the system, operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway, or Muni, operates on three routes, covering 12 miles of the Financial District, Nob Hill, Chinatown, North Beach, Russian Hill, and Fisherman’s Wharf areas.

The cars come in two types–double ended cars run along the California Street line, and single-ended cars run along the the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines. The single-ended cars are 27-feet, 6-inches long, 8 feet wide, and have a passenger capacity of 60, 29 of them seated. The double-ended cars are 30-feet, 3-inches long, 8-feet wide and have a capacity of 68 passengers, 34 of them seated. The single-ended Powell lines start and end their journeys at turntables–one at the Hyde and Beach terminus, one at the Taylor and Babe terminus, and one at the Powell and Market terminus, where they are rotated to reverse direction. Each of the cars are numbered, have wood and brass fittings in the 19th century style, and are often painted in differing colors. They run on

The cars are powered by engines in a central powershouse that wind a looped cable under the city streets, guided by a system of grooved pulleys. When a gripman in the car applies the grip handle, the grip reaches through a slot in the street and grabs the cable. This pulls the car along at a steady speed of 9.5mph. To stop, the gripman releases the grip and applies a brake. The underground cables are 1.25 inches in diameter and consist of six steel strands of 19 wires each, wrapping around a rope, which acts a shock absorber.

Voice Over Training Guide For Voice Over Talents

A voice actor actually works harder than a Hollywood superstar. It is quite difficult for a voice actor to put feelings and emotions to what he is reading, all the while knowing that he’s not seen on screen. He must jump into the skin of the character and pump life into the dialogues. This is where voice over training comes into play.

Voice over training helps voice actors learn the craft and find gainful employment in a growing area. Thousands of animated TV shows, cartoons, radio advertisements, web shows and movies are produced on a regular basis. Take note that about 20 to 30 characters make up the cast of just one movie or TV show. There are global opportunities galore for a voice actor.

Voice over training course – the basic skills that you ought to have

Diction is one of the most vital tools of the trade. The student must have perfect enunciation and for that reason must attend speech classes to get his diction right. Every voice over actor has two roles to fulfill – “lending voice” and “acting.” So, fantastic diction is not enough to begin voice over training – the student must also enroll in an acting course before joining the voice over course.

What’s taught in a voiceover training course

The student learns how to evaluate and interpret commercial copy for announcer and real-person roles. He also learns how to interpret narrative copy and gets the hang of technical copy as well. The course teaches the student how to proficiently coordinate mind, mouth and voice so that he can sound true to his character. The student also learns how to take direction.

Reading, recording, play back, and listening are done continuously in an excellent voice talent training course. This is done in order for students to get it correctly. Students learn tactics such as inflection, timing and articulation. They perform warm-ups and vocal exercises as well. They understand how to maintain their voice health. When students are already half-way into the voice over training course, they become skilled at using and adjusting pitch, tone, volume and delivery speed to meet the needs of numerous types of jobs.

Once a student completes the training, he learns how to market his skills, tap proper contacts, and land voice over work. Instructors of the voice over program also assist them in creating a voice over demo, which would become part of their portfolio. An opportunity to experience working in a real studio is provided in a solid voice over training course for students. They also learn what the do’s and don’ts are whenever they are behind the microphone or in a sound booth.

Selecting a voice over training program

There are two facets to voice training. Students who are attracted in selling must opt for a commercial voice over course. Commercial voice talents are used for selling. Several of the areas that require this type of voice overs are radio ads, TV advertisements, phone and other media features. Selling skills are also covered by a voice over course since all commercial voice overs sell a service or a product. Acting skills are not dealt with by this course. Students who are interested in showbiz must opt for a TV and movie voice over and dubbing program. Such courses require lip-synching, and so the voice over actor has to learn acting skills too.

To conclude, all the world’s a stage and we must play a part. So if you would like to be a voice actor, and you want to learn how to raise your voice, better enroll in a reputable voice actor training program.

Alternative to Cable Tv

Perhaps you have grown weary of ever increasing cable television bills. That wouldn’t be surprising, as statistics show that cable TV companies raise rates an average of 4% every year! One alternative is satellite TV, but a third choice available in many areas is AT&T U-verse service.

U-verse is the brand name product of a new technology being rolled out by AT&T. Basically, it can give you all of the same services that your cable TV company can offer. Not only will you get digital quality video service including quite a bit of HD content, but you can also subscribe to high speed internet and of course your home phone line as well.    A few years back, cable companies began to offer triple-play bundles which offered all three services together. That seemed to wake up phone companies like Verizon and AT&T, both of which now offer these same triple-play bundles.

So can AT&T U-verse service stack up competitively with your cable TV operator?

Some side-by-side comparison shopping would probably be in order if you are looking at AT&T’s service.

Generally, if you are a new customer you can strike a pretty good deal, especially if you want all three services. One thing to consider is that U-verse is brand new in many areas, so some customers have reported bugs in the video service. While cable TV companies have been at it for decades, AT&T is new to the video game.

Overall, U-verse may fit your needs if you are looking for an affordable option to cable. The first step is to see if it is even available to you, as the deployment of the service is taking several years. If not, there is still the option of going with one of the satellite TV companies if you are looking to dump your cable TV company.

Braxton Swingle covers various cable and satellite services at the satellite TV blog. Check out the latest Dish Network deals that are available in your area.

A Voice Artist’s Guide To Voice Over Training

Between a Hollywood superstar and a voice actor, the latter actually works harder. It is quite difficult for a voice actor to put feelings and emotions to what he is reading, all the while knowing that he’s not seen on screen. The voice actor must be able to empathize with the persona that he portrays and make sure that he breathes life into the script. This is where voice over training comes into play.

Voice over training aids voice actors understand the craft and find gainful employment in a growing area. There are 1000s of cartoon and animated TV shows, web shows, TV/radio advertisements, web videos, and movies being made continually. Moreover, each movie/TV show has a cast of more than 20-30 characters. The opportunities for a voice talent actually abound internationally.

Basic skills required to join a voice over training course

One of the most important tools of the trade is diction. The student must have perfect enunciation and therefore must attend speech classes to get his diction properly. The course teaches the student how to proficiently coordinate mind, mouth and voice so that he can sound true to his character. Taking direction is also learned by the student.

A great voice actor training program makes students read, record, play back, listen, and then do it all over again until they get it right. Students warm-up and perform vocal exercises and learn techniques like timing, inflection, and articulation. They figure out how to maintain their voice fitness. When students are already half-way into the voice over training program, they become competent at using and adjusting pitch, tone, volume and delivery speed to meet the needs of various types of jobs.

Once a student completes the training, he learns how to market his skills, tap proper contacts, and land voice over work. The course instructors also help them produce a voice over demo for their portfolio. A solid voice over training program gives students the opportunity to work in a real studio and fully grasp what they must and shouldn’t do in a sound booth and when behind the microphone.

Selecting a voice over training course

There are two aspects to voice training. A commercial voice over course must be chosen by students who are interested in selling. Commercial voice talents are used for selling. Shoddy wiring

Some cool Internet Phone Cable images:

Shoddy wiring
Internet Phone Cable

In my bedroom, there were two UTP cables coming out of the wall. One going towards the window, one to the living room wall. Supposedly, they were doing nothing, so I yanked out the one to the window.

And then, no internet.

Turns out the cables weren’t UTP cables, but phone cables. Also turns out that the cable going to the window contained some sort of a loopback to connect to the cable going to the living room. And yep, modem’s in the living room.

After much debugging, I found out that the bedroom window cable still worked when connected to the bedroom window phone plug socket. I decided to cut the window cable out of the loop, but for some reason, I couldn’t get the living room cable to work anymore. Then again, it exists of – from what I can tell – three cables, so that’s not too surprising.

In the mean time, I’ve loosely connected the incoming telephone cable to a phone plug socket, connected to the modem, connected to the TimeCapsule. Both of which are in the kitchen.

And yes, the TimeCapsule is on top of the microwave.

I hate calling the cable company. This is the fourth phone call in 24 hours to get my internet service working. Obviously it’s working now. My modem died, so it wasn’t the cable company’s fault this time, but I received conflicting information every time I called. Plus, after three years at the same address and with the same equipment, they still don’t have my contact information correct. Now that I’m back online, I’m going to try catching up and commenting on my contacts’ photostreams this weekend.

Cable Internet Speed

The days of painfully slow dial up internet connections are finally gone. Everybody has taken to the new breed of high speed internet. It’s not exactly a problem of plenty but there are enough choices to warrant confusions.

The three main sources of fast track internet are cable, satellite and DSL. Each of them has its peculiar points which give it a differentiating factor. The debate is not about which is the best choice; it’s the assessment of which one suits you the best.

All these mediums have defining advantages over the traditional dial up connection. First and foremost, they let you use both the internet and telephone at the same time, which is a real privilege if you know the trouble of constant cable switching. Secondly, as the name suggests these methods are much faster than dial up, as fast as 40 times.

These along with other facilities / features that add on to the user experience make dial up an absolute redundant choice.

Cable based is the oldest form of high speed internet. It requires an underground cable connection, which doesn’t necessarily mean using a cable TV.  The major drawback with a cable connection is that its speed is dependent on the no. of simultaneous users. In other words the speed from backend is divided amongst the active users, hence more the users, lesser the speed for each. On the positive notes, the charges for cable connection are generally more economical than others, especially if it’s a composite plan with cable TV.

DSL connections are setup over the telephone lines instead of cables.

As a result it is always offer steady speed irrespective of the number of users. DSL internet plans start at very low costs and climb up with higher speeds and usage criteria.

Satellite connections work through satellite dishes which receive and transmit internet to and from satellite. It’s ideally suited for remote areas where cable and telephone lines are not accessible. However, with time these are also gaining popularity across cities as well.

You need to study your requirements and choose the option that meets your requirements the best. There is no right or wrong choice per say. It’s more of a case of ‘to each his own’.
